The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the declining star, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 Indeed it is not except a Revelation which is revealed, 4 Taught to him by one intense in strength - 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
