The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And children present [with him] 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
