The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 Thamood cried lies in their insolence 11 When the basest of them broke forth 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
