The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night enshrouding 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And affirms goodness, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 who belied and turned away, 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 They do not expect any reward 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
