The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
