The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and springs. 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
