The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
