The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
