The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 His wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
