The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it setteth. 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
