Nay, and by the moon, 32 By the night when it withdraweth. 33 And by oath of the morning, when it spreads light. 34 Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes), 35 A warning to mortals, 36 A warning unto him of you who shall go forward or who chooseth to lag behind. 37 Every soul is mortgaged for its own deeds. 38 Except the companions of the right, 39 Sitting in the gardens, asking 40 And (ask) of the Sinners: 41 'What thrusted you into Sakar?' 42 and they shall reply, "We were not among those who prayed; 43 Nor did we used to feed the poor. 44 And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses. 45 and we cried lies to the Day of Doom, 46 until certainty came upon us [in death]." 47 The intercession of their intercessors shall not benefit them. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 As if they were asses taking fright 50 fleeing -- before a lion? 51 Yea, everyone of them claims that he [himself] ought to have been given revelations unfolded! 52 Nay, but they do not [believe in and hence, do not] fear the life to come. 53 but this is truly a reminder. 54 So whoever wills may heed advice from it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
