۞ Before this We gave Abraham his virtue, for We knew him. 51 When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said: "Certainly you and your fathers have all been in manifest error." 54 They said: "Are you speaking in earnest, or only jesting?" 55 He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify. 56 "And by Allah, I shall plot a plan (to destroy) your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs." 57 Then he broke them all into pieces, sparing only the supreme one among them that they may possibly return to him. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 Some said, "We heard a young man, called Abraham, talking about them." 60 [The others] said: "Then bring him before the peoples eyes, so that they might bear witness [against him]!" 61 They said: Have you done this to our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He answered: "Rather it was this supreme one who has done it. So ask them, if they can speak." 63 So they returned one to another, and they said, 'Surely it is you who are the evildoers.' 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? 66 Fie upon you and upon all that you worship instead of God! Will you not, then, use your reason?" 67 They said: burn him, and succour your gods, if ye will be doing. 68 We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety for Abraham!' 69 And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 70 for We saved him and Lot, [his brother's son, by guiding them] to the land which We have blessed for all times to come. 71 And We gave him Ishaq and Yaqoub, a son's son, and We made (them) all good. 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge and delivered him from the city which practiced abomination. They were indeed a wicked people. 74 And We took him into Our mercy; surely he was of the good. 75
