A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
