The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
