The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
