Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
