A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
