The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
