Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
