Mary (Maryam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. 'Ain. Sad. 1 Commemorate the beneficence of your Lord on Zachariah, His devotee, 2 Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret, 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 "Now, behold, I am afraid of [what] my kinsfolk [will do] after I am gone, for my wife has always been barren. Bestow, then, upon me, out of Thy grace, the gift of a successor 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 'O Zachariah, We give you good tidings of a son, and he shall be called John (Yahya); a name We have never given before' 7 "My Lord!" [said Zachariah], "How shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached such extreme old age?" 8 He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing." 9 [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." 10 So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon. 11 "O John! Hold the Book with all your strength." We had bestowed wisdom upon him while he was still a child; 12 And compassion from Our presence, and purity; and he was devout, 13 honoring his parents, being neither arrogant nor rebellious. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
