Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
