Overwhelming (Al-Ghaasheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Has there come to you the narration of the overwhelming (i.e. the Day of Resurrection); 1 Some faces will on that Day be downcast, 2 toiling [under burdens of sin,] worn out [by fear,] 3 they shall enter a burning Fire 4 Drinking from a boiling spring, 5 They will have no food other than bitter and thorny fruit 6 which will neither fatten them nor satisfy them. 7 However, on that day the faces of other people will be happy. 8 Well-pleased because of their striving, 9 They shall be in a Garden lofty: 10 wherein they will not hear any vain talk. 11 Therein will be a flowing spring, 12 Within it are couches raised high 13 and goblets set at hand, 14 and cushions arrayed in rows, 15 And rich carpets spread. 16 DO, THEN, they [who deny resurrection] never gaze at the clouds pregnant with water, [and observe] how they are created? 17 And the sky: how it was raised high? 18 and on the mountains, how they are firmly set up, 19 And the earth – how it has been spread out? 20 So, [O Prophet] exhort them: your task is only to exhort, 21 thou canst not compel them [to believe]. 22 Except whoever turns away and disbelieves – 23 God will punish them with the greatest torment. 24 Verily unto Us is their return. 25 and verily, It is for Us to call them to account. 26
