A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin of disbelief. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 And say: "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefore proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
