The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
