The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. ۩ 19
