Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
