The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
