A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
