The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 even he who cried lies, and turned away; 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
