Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Considering all this - could there be, to anyone endowed with reason, a [more] solemn evidence of the truth? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley. 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Lord has disgraced me." 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
