The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
