By the moon, 32 by the retreating night, 33 And by the dawn when it brightens, 34 Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions] 35 It is a warning for mankind 36 To him among you who wishes to go forward or remain behind. 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 except the Companions of the Right. 39 Sitting in the gardens, asking 40 From the guilty. 41 "What has brought you into hell-fire?" 42 They will say: we have not been of those who prayed. 43 nor did we feed the destitute. 44 And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it], 45 And we used to call the day of judgment a lie; 46 till the certainty (death) overtook us' 47 The intercession of their intercessors shall not benefit them. 48 Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away 49 As if they were asses taking fright 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about. 52 By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, 53 Yes indeed, this is an advice. 54 So whoever pleases may mind it. 55 But none will remember, unless Allah wills, He is the Owner of fear, the Owner of forgiveness. 56
