Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the daybreak, 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
