Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
