The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
