The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Are free of blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
