Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
