The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And your garments do purify, 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
