The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 Indeed, he saw him in another descent 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
