۞ (God will command the angels), "Gather together the unjust, their spouses, and what they had worshipped 22 Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire 23 “And stop them – they are to be questioned.” 24 [They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?" 25 Indeed, today they are surrendering themselves completely.” 26 They will then turn towards each other (and start wrangling). 27 Saying: "It were you who imposed yourselves upon us." 28 Those say, 'No; on the contrary, you were not believers; 29 “And we did not have any control over you; but in fact you yourselves were rebellious.” 30 So the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste; 31 For we had led you astray. In fact we ourselves were astray." 32 So, they will become partners in punishment. 33 Thus do We treat the culprits. 34 Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)," they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it). 35 And they said: are we going to abandon our gods on account of a poet distracted? 36 'No indeed; but he brought the truth, and confirmed the Envoys. 37 Verily ye are going to taste a torment afflictive. 38 although you shall not be requited for aught but what you were wont to do. 39 But Allah's chosen servants (shall be spared this woeful end). 40 For them there is a known provision, 41 Fruits; and they will be honoured. 42 in the Gardens of Bliss 43 sitting face to face upon couches, 44 a goblet from a spring shall be passed round to them 45 White and delicious to the drinkers; 46 There shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith. 47 And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes. 48 As if they were eggs, safely hidden. 49 They will turn to each other and ask questions. 50 One of them will say, "I had a companion who asked me, 51 Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death). 52 "(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?" 53 (The man) said: "Will you look down?" 54 So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. 55 He says, 'By God, wellnigh thou didst destroy me; 56 Had I not the guidance of my Lord, I would certainly have been brought into torment". 57 But then, [O my friends in paradise,] is it [really] so that we are not to die 58 "Except our first death, and we shall not be punished? (after we have entered Paradise)." 59 This is indeed the mighty triumph, 60 For the like of it should the workers work. 61 Is this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers. 63 It is a tree that grows at the bottom of Hell. 64 Its produce is as it were the heads of the serpents. 65 Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith. 66 Then on top of it they will have a brew of boiling water. 67 Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell. 68 These are the ones who found their fathers steeped in error, 69 So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps. 70 Thus, indeed, most of the people of old went astray before them, 71 and We sent among them warners; 72 See how those who were warned met their end! 73 EXCEPT for God's true servants, [most people are apt to go astray.] 74
