He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
