A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
