He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 Yet you pay attention 5 you attended to him, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and fearfully, 9 you ignore him. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 It is We Who pour forth water, pouring, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
