The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and flee from the statues! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have not appointed any one but angels as keepers of Hell, and their number that We have fixed is to make it a means of contention for disbelievers, so that those who were given the Book may be certain, and the faith of the believers may have greater increase, and the people of the Book and believers may not be deceived, and the sceptics and infidels may say: "What does God mean by this parable?" That is how God leads whosoever He will astray, and guides whosoever He will. None knows the armies of your Lord save Him self. This is no more than reminder for mankind. 31
