He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fears (Allah), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what has God created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olives, and palms, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his wife and his children, 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
