A throng of the ancients 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
