a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
