The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
