The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 and guard their private parts 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
