Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn; 1 And [by] ten nights 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
